Kathleen Smucker was recognized as the Student of the Month for March. Congratulations, Kathleen! We enjoyed sitting down and hearing a little bit about your journey at MCCS. Read her interview below.
What are your plans after graduation?
“After graduation, I plan to attend Messiah University with a major in nursing and a minor in Spanish.”
What sports, clubs, or activities have you been involved in? Any awards or special recognitions?
“During my time at Mount Calvary, I’ve participated in basketball, I’ve been on student council, and I’m a chaplain. As a chaplain, we help to lead elementary and middle school chapels, as well as class chapels. We teach those as well.”
What classes have helped you in your career objective?
“I’m planning to go into pediatrics, so a class that has been helpful for me the past two years has been my teacher internship for K5 with Ms. Nye; it’s really taught me patience and how to help regulate the kids’ emotions, because they have a lot of them. My anatomy class has been something I’ve enjoyed, and that will set me up for my future as well.”
How have the teachers at MCCS made an impact on your life?
“A teacher at Mount Calvary who has really impacted me is Mrs. Risser. She’s always been there for me; she always listens when I have a lot to say, whether it’s about school or it’s unrelated to school, she’s always shown an interest, and I really appreciate that. She’s really made an impact on me.”
What has God been teaching you lately?
“I would say the biggest lesson God is teaching me has been patience and just being able to have peace and joy in the stage of my life that I’m in. I tend to want to control or predict my future, and I think He’s helped me relax and know that He’s in control of my life, and I don’t have anything to worry about.”
Do you have any advice for younger students?
“I would say to be grateful for everything you have. Try to focus on finding God in the little things, and that’s going to lead to more peace and joy, and therefore, you’ll impact the people around you.
I would also say being grateful that we’re able to attend a private school, because we get to learn about God in every subject, which is amazing. The teachers here really show God’s character in the way that they care for us and love us.”
What is one of your favorite high school memories?
“My favorite memories would probably be the times that I’ve spent with my basketball team. We got really close.
Also, I would say our fall senior trip. I thought that was really amazing – as a class, we got to dive into God’s Word together, and I would say that really drew us close. I’m really happy that we split up our senior trip this time, so we could draw close in the beginning of the year and have just a better year all together.”
Any closing thoughts?
“In closing, I’m definitely going to miss basketball and the time that I get to spend with my friends and my little sister, but I’m really looking forward to the future, and I’m really grateful fort he time I’ve spent here and the people that I’ve gotten to be around.”
